ZeBloc : Who are you?
Jamie: My name is Jamie Emerson, I am a student at University of Colorado, studying Quantitative Economics. I enjoy climbing and developing boulders in my spare time.
ZeBloc : As a local climber, how would you describe the bouldering scene in Colorado? After visiting 3 areas and a couple of gyms, I was impressed by the number of boulderers and the average level which is very high.
Jamie: CO is filled with motivated climbers. There are many people that get outside every weekend, and often times during the week. It is surprising how many strong climbers there are here, probably on par with anywhere else in the world. And not surprising we have many problems to try at all levels. In the summer, people head to RMNP, Mt. Evans, and Lincoln Lake mostly. And there are always a few people out there looking for new boulders.
ZeBloc : Which bouldering areas would you recommend in Colorado?
Jamie: Rocky Mountain National Park, Mt. Evans and Lincoln Lake are some of the best places to climb. The scenery is beautiful, the conditions are pretty good in the summer, and there are thousands of problems to try.
ZeBloc : Give me the name of 3 boulders you would recommend in each of those ranges : V1-V5, V6-V9, V10-…
Jamie: V1-V5: The Ladder, Mt. Evans, The Kind, RMNP, and Walk the Line, Lincoln Lake
V6-V9: Tangerine Man, Lincoln Lake, Full Chaos, RMNP, and Seurat, Mt. Evans
V10+: Whispers of Wisdom, RMNP, Paint it Black, RMNP, Eternia, RMNP
ZeBloc : Tell us a little bit about the new guidebook you are working on. Which areas is it going to cover? When will it be available?
Jamie: The new guidebook is a significant update to the original book I published with Sharp End Publishing in 2011. The first book had 350 problems and this new edition will include more than 500 new problems in addition to the original 350 for a total of over 900. It will cover RMNP, Wild Basin, Mt. Evans, Elkland, Endovalley, Big Elk Meadows and hopefully Lincoln Lake. It should be out in 2018!
Jamie: Hard to argue with Adam Ondra, especially after his fast repeat of the Dawn Wall, having basically no experience in Yosemite.
